Sitting under a shady fig tree at The Patch in Sonoma, 34-year-old Lazaro Calderon laughs when he confesses that he grew up as a city boy in Mexico City and never much cared for eating tomatoes.

Now an experienced farmer, Calderon has taught himself to save his own tomato seeds and start his own seedlings in order to nurture a juicy array of heirloom tomatoes at the 5½-acre garden plot he tends just two blocks northeast of the Sonoma plaza
