Ask the vendors about their favorite way to prepare squash and the other vegetables they grow. Santa Rosa Seafood has fresh dungeness crab. The Wednesday market has the wonderful prepared foods of Lata’s and Mi Fiesta. Mi Fiesta is featuring sweet tamales during the holidays, an unusual and perfect ending for the big event or sparking up a meal of leftovers.

The Wednesday market was full of good things representing the fall season. (Although there are still raspberries and tomatoes keeping up the banner for summer)

Santa Rosa Seafood had first of the season,large dungeness crab. (They also had lobster bouillabaisse!)

As usual DeSantis Farms had something fun to try — buddah’s hand.

Crescent Moon had large bunches of escarole – you can have it hot or cold, dressed up or down. It’s very versatile.

Lata has been making wonderful dishes from ingredients such as the beautiful peppers found at Crescent Moon Another week she grilled ripe black olives from DeSantis Farms DeSantis always has something fun and new to try. Last week -olives to cure or an olive ready to grill or fry. Lata grilled some and they soon disappeared.

‘‘Most people buy them to look at them,” Tom Noble of Armstrong Valley Farm in Guerneville says of his gorgeous winter squashes.

“I tell them they can do both, they can enjoy the appearance but eat them, too,” he adds as he shows me the gorgeous deep orange and beautiful squat shape of one of his Cinderella squashes. Its color is mesmerizing.

Tom is at the Wednesday and Saturday market. Not only wonderful winter squash but many varieties of potatoes and garlic.
